What Now?

I don’t want to sound like that guy who is always whining about politics, let’s be clear. I have never been much of a pundit and as a pastor I am not legally allowed to flat out say what I think in an official capacity. That said, I am concerned about where things are headed since this election season has picked up steam. I am starting to notice that most people don’t have a view of politics, they just vote for who they like. So I’m gonna think out loud here and try to think of a few things that shape my political view.

  1. I believe individuals should never depend on the Government to provide anything for them other than protection. And even that should be handled first by the individual.  We have wildfires out here in California, and I will never wait for the Government to tell me I need to leave my house, I will be long gone before it gets to that point. I make a living as a pastor and a self employed business owner and I opt out of social security. I would never depend on the government for my retirement.
  2. I believe in separation of church and state. I don’t want the Government controlling my faith or that of any one else.
  3. I believe in equal opportunity and not equal outcome. We should all have the same opportunities but it is naive to expect that we will can all have the same outcome. That sounds cold, but it’s true. I just don’t have it in me to make millions of dollars but the opportunity is there.
  4. I don’t believe the government should make laws or rulings based on collectivism, they should only think in terms of autonomous individuals.
  5. I believe there is no hope for Iraq and we should walk away. Time and time again we fail to recognize the irrationality if Middle Eastern politics.
  6. The United States needs to stay out of the business of other nations in a big way.

We are looking at a bunch of candidates who are all the same. They will all raise taxes, allow the war to continue, not improve health care, not secure the border and we are still going to vote for them. I will keep my head up.

Who should we vote for?

    This is right on!

I have many discussions over dependence on the government and it seems that people can not let go of that. Especially the ones that needed it only for a short time. “but what if…”

Oh well, I’m with you here.

I agree with you on most of those points. With that said, Obama ’08!
