Mountaineering
The mountains have always been a part of my life. I couldn’t imagine living in the mid-west or somewhere flat. It’s kind of early in the season, but Micah and I decided to go for it and make an attempt at San Jacinto. We started at the trail head at 6200 feet and headed for a pass at 8500 feet that would take us to the eastern slope and a shear drop with a great view of the desert, which is in full bloom this time of year. The hike would be about 8 miles…nothing huge.
About 80 percent of the hike was on snow and a few spots were hairy and when we got to one of our junctions, there was no way to tell where the trail was under 5 feet of snow so we made a change of plans and started heading for the summit to see how that trail was and kind of get a feel for it and maybe come back in a few weeks and go the whole way. We ended up stopping shy of 9000 feet and heading back down, not wanting to push real hard on the first hike of the season. We will be back. To make the summit is about a 10 hour day, anyone want to join us.
The Pics:
Devil’s Slide trail was pretty sketchy without crampons. You’re in for a wild ride if you slip here
Trail markers under snow.
Lunch on the mountain.
I’m in… as long as you know CPR;-)

Heck yeah! I love to hike but haven’t done it in years. I guess I know too many sedentary people. A buddy of mine likes to camp and fish, so that’s the only outdoors I have done in quite some time. Let me know when you guys plan on going… I just need to get a decent pair of hiking boots and a day pack of some kind for water and food.

I’ll hit a trail out here in Tennessee simultaneously. Looks like an awesome hike except for the snow…BLECK!
We just got a few inches here over the weekend and I hibernate until it melts. I think I got my fill in Chicago and the U.P.
Next time you’re in Sac try Horsetail Falls, it is straight up alongside a waterfall on hwy 50.

Man, I’m jealous. I love mountains. So why do I live out here in the flat Midwest? I ask myself that question all the time.
