Preaching the Word

Some Dude: I love church ‘X’ because they just preach the Word.

Me: What does that mean?

Some Dude: You know, they just preach from the Bible.

Me: Sounds like every church I know of.

Some Dude: No, most churches don’t preach straight from the Bible. Most pastors tell stupid stories and jokes and stuff.

Me: I’m pretty sure if we asked every pastor in town if they ‘preached the Word’ they would say that they do.

Some Dude: Well….uh

I had this conversation no less than three times last week. I have come to the conclusion that ‘preach the word‘ is Christian code language for:

This church has the same socio-political views as I do.

Does your church ‘preach the Word’?

Impact Church gets a new website

I’m not gonna lie, the new Impact Church website is hot. Sure the color scheme is not what you have come to expect from a church website, brown and mustard, but someone has to blaze the trail toward the cutting edge.

impact-church-website1

I’ll let you in on a little secret, especially if you are a church plant like us, or a smaller church on a budget. The site is built on an open source platform (read: FREE) called Joomla and the template was picked up at Rockettheme.com. It means the site went from an idea to live with about 20 hours of work.

Do me a favor, go check it out and then come back over here and let me know what you think. Be honest, we’re not too proud.

Confessions of a pastor

I have to be honest, I never read the following books:

  • Wild at Heart
  • Purpose Driven Church/Life/Youth Ministry/Husband/Dog/etc.
  • The Five Love Languages

And I don’t want to.

Remember that guy in high school that never read the books in English class and still pulled an A on the test? That was me. I got the A because I picked up all that I needed to know during the class discussion.

I feel the same way about a lot of books that seem relevant to my life. They get talked about so much over coffee, in sermons, on blogs and in other books that I pick up all the main points.

I think that’s probably a testament to how good these books are. They impacted so many people, that the second hand impact is still pretty good.

What book(s) have you skipped that you probably should have read?

Spring is in the air

Directly out my bedroom window to the east  sits  San Jacinto Peak. It rises out of the valley floor to 10,800 feet. It’s formed by sitting directly on the San Andreas fault making it’s eastern slope the steepest and tallest slope in the lower 48, rising almost straight up 10,000 feet from the desert floor.

I look at the mountain every morning waiting for enough snow to melt to make a run at it. Last year we made one attempt at the summit in the spring and got shut down from the amount of snow we had to fight through. We ran out of time and had to scurry back down.

There is a rather small window of time to climb it because there isn’t really any running water up there and it gets wicked hot in the summer. Plus you avoid the crowds if you aren’t afraid of a little snow.

Micah and I are on standby, waiting for the conditions to be right.

Church can be spiritual

Being involved in church plants I have had this conversation a few hundred times:

Some dude: What kind  of teaching do you guys do?

Me: Usually someone talks

Some dude: I meant like, teaching style

Me: Well, we teach stuff out of the Bible

Some dude: Do you go verse by verse or is it topical

Me: Those are my only choices?

Some dude: What else is there?

Me: How about how Jesus taught?

Some dude: How’s that?

Me: Spiritual

Some dude: confused look

Have we pigeonholed churches so much that we can only pick from two teaching styles? On the one side you have the expository thing. And the other side of things is the performance style teaching. One feels like a classroom and the other feels like an episode of Yo Gabba Gabba…without the break beats.

So, what kind of teaching do you guys do?
