A lesson in movement
Seth posted this and I have a take on it too.
HOW to start a movement is one thing, but I’m interested in WHY people join a movement.
The movement in this video is a clear case of the appearance of spontaneity that I have talked about before. The movement worked because it appeared spontaneous. I can’t say for sure that it was, after all I don’t know guy #1′s intent.
I’m not saying that it has to be spontaneous, movements can be planned and orchestrated, but I believe our current generation responds better to the spontaneous.
Can spontaneity be planned?
I totally loved this video. I saw it on seth's blog and then sent it – via facebook message – to my entire youth group. I told them: "This is what I expect from you."
I think we church leaders can grow incredibly frustrated because we try to manufacture this sort of movement. It can happen, but it can't be planned. If it is planned – I'm sure we'll screw it up.
The trick – i think – is to realize that God is already doing stuff. In the analogy of the video – God is already the one doing a funky dance in cut off jeans. Our job is to be the 2nd and 3rd guy to go jump in. Grab our friends and run. Surely God won't always be doing that dance, but we'll need to pay attention and move and change as he does different dances to different rhythms.
