The one month report

AJ at the Congress Street bridge waiting for the bats to swarm

We moved to Austin one month ago, here’s my observations thus far:

  • In California my borrowed motto was – ‘Anything fun costs at least eight dollars’. In Austin that motto is now – ‘Anything fun costs at least three dollars.
  • I’m not gonna lie; its wicked hot here.
  • St. Augustine is the worst excuse for grass I have ever tread on with my bare feet. In California we call it crab grass.
  • When I walk around with my large dog in Southern California people scoop up their children/toy dogs and get ready to dial 911, I’ve gathered that people in Texas know their way around big dogs.
  • Two things that we have in Texas that we didn’t in So Cal; trees and bodies of water that God intended to be there…the ocean aside.
  • In N Out is at least 17 times better than Sonic, as far as burgers go.
  • Big chain casual dining restaurants do not have a chance in Austin, the local places are too good.
  • Austin Netflix. You know how Netflix has a section that shows the popular titles for your town? Well the Austin one is awesome, whereas the Murrieta one was good for learning which movies spent the most on marketing.

Austin is looking like the perfect fit for us. It’s an amazing balance of culture and family living that is hard to find.

Sonic is not the best burger around by a long shot. Of course, the In N Out I went to in Milpitas wasn’t all that, either. And, uh, NONE of the lakes around Austin are natural. They are all man-made. :)

Sonic isn’t for burgers; it’s for drinks. Get a real vanilla coke. Or a cherry vanilla Dr. Pepper (my favorite). Or a cream pie shake. Yummmm.

In-N-Out definitely beats them for burgers, sure. But if you want burgers there are other places I need to take you (and not fast food probably). Have you been to Hut’s yet?

As for the heat… yyyyyyyyyeah. I doubt you’ll ever see a summer hotter than this one. I don’t recall one, and I’ve been here since ’91. Even with the crazy heat, I’ll take Austin over just about anywhere else. I love it here.

Yay – I am so glad ya’ll are not completely miserable here. I personally think ATX is the best city in Texas, but I’m a hometown girl and very biased!

As far as burgers go, Sonnic is only good for their drinks and ice (they have the best ice there!). I get my burger fix from Dan’s on South Lamar. They also have a killer breakfast if you ever wanna take the family down there some Saturday morning.

    So glad ya’ll are here~

@robert \\ but God put a river there. the lakes in So Cal are created basically by running huge pipes from northern california.

Since I am from the same place you are but lived out here three years, I know where you are coming from and where you are going. We should get our families together and we can give you a cool tour.

BTW, try P. Terry’s on the corner of Barton Springs road and Lamar. It is a total In-n-Out rip off down to the plain menu and little white hats. Its good for a laugh but it aint In-N-Out. I went to Ranch Community which was right across the street from In-n-Out and ate there at least three times a week.

Hey there! Glad you guys are enjoying Austin! For burgers we like Moonies on old 183 in Cedar Park. Get a side of sweet potato french fries. We also like the butter burger (Lord help your heart) from Culvers on Braker Lane (if you like modern home/office decor there is a super cool shop next door to it too). Lastly I just had Mighty Fine burgers today at Braker and MOPAC. Yum! I agree with the others – skip the food at Sonic and just go for drinks during happy hour. Can’t beat a cold slush in the wicked heat.

    Dude,

If your St. Aug doesn’t feel good on your feet, something is wrong. I would give my kingdom to have both yards in SA instead of the wretched Bermuda. My front is almost 100% but still lacks a little.

Hey Vince, very happy that you’re settling in well in Austin. Keep that grass between your toes and enjoy life. It’s all good. Happy 4th of July to you guys … I’ll bet they do fireworks good in Austin.

@damon // i love me some really low cut Bermuda, especially when it’s a golf fairway.

@wayne // I think we can actually buy fireworks in Texas…which is a good start.
