Austin | three month report
Two words:
Why isn’t every movie theater in the country like this? You are served food and drinks all through the movie. Of course I can see it not working out in California because it would get regulated and taxed out of existence, but all you other states, get with it.
I can’t believe an entire summer just flew by. I have been crazy busy getting things going at Gateway Church and we have spent a lot of time taking in all there is to do in Austin.
Here are some of the highlights for every0ne back in Cali:
Parks with trees
Yes all my NorCal peeps know what it is like, but most of you Southern California people have probably only seen them in pictures or on vacation. So how it works is, you go to a park with your kids, and there are trees all over the place. Cool huh?
Kerby Lane
It’s our go to restaurant as a family. They got everything even some lights out vegetarian vittles.
I’m definitely missing mountains
I’ve been doing plenty of mountain biking, they still call it mountain biking around here even though we lack the mountains. There’s a pretty cool scene here and some decent spots. You do, however, need to pedal in the big ring if you want to do fast whereas in California all we had to do was drive to the top and let her fly.
I hear the weather is fantastic here in the fall. Can’t wait.

Godfathering | love before it’s too late

Children born to a young man
are like arrows in a warrior’s hands.
How joyful is the man whose quiver is full of them!-proverbs 127
As a parent, I have a some serious concern about the future of my children. I want them to be safe. I want people to like them. I want them to find success in their endeavors.
Do we get too caught up in trying to manipulate the cards to favor those we love most so that they might have a good life in the future?
I just read this article about a kid who’s future life seemed to be the only thing on is parents mind. I don’t know these people and all the details, but regardless of all that, it would appear that maybe they forgot to be truly concerned about where he was in the moment and instead gambled it all on what his future might be…and they lost it all.
I’m going to love my kids today simply because I love them today.
I’m gonna read them books not because it will make them better students, but because they love it.
I’m going to discipline them because I want them to be good right now.
I’m going to show them what it means to be a Christ Follower because it’s good for them right now.
And maybe at the end of the day when I pull those arrows out of my quiver, they will fire true and straight.
But that’s in God’s hands_

It doesn’t add up | health care
I haven’t gotten political in a while, after all last year was an election year, so maybe it took me a while to recover.
I might also add that you shouldn’t take me too seriously on politics…these are just my observations.
So the whole health care thing just doesn’t add up. That is to say that the powerful forces that actually drive legislation want nothing to do with a good health care solution.
Track with me for a second on a few observations.
- The bulk of money that comes into the coffers of Republican politicians is from big business health care providers and insurance companies. They cannot burn these bridges or they’re out of cash.
- The biggest contributions to Democrats come from lawyers. The vast majority of the money made in the legal industry is related to health care and medicine.
- The biggest money maker for big media is drug companies. Watch the evening news on any one of the networks. Literally all but a few of the commercials will be for prescription drugs. I don’t see them going to bat for the American people and risking bad relations with their sugar daddy.
Imagine these three ‘legs‘ forming a tripod and at the top of that tripod is the cost of our health care. As the aforementioned institutions grow, the cost gets higher, and they all grow at pretty much the same rate and feed off each other making affordable health care more and more out of reach to Americans.
One of these has to give and take one for the the American public. I don’t see that happening anytime soon

You ask, I’ll answer
I field a lot of questions every day. Most of which are pretty dry:
What was that one website?
How do I subscribe to a podcast?
Does this make me look fat?
So I figured I would spice things up a bit and handle some other stuff. So go to the Ask Vince page and let me in on your deepest questions about absolutely anything. Or just ask me how I make the best Asparagus ever.

Asking an important question about internet church
Head on over the ChurchCrunch to see the latest post in the ‘confessions of an internet pastor’ series.
Today’s question is:
What if we had no ingrained concept of what a church service is, go to a building – hear some songs – listen to a talking head – walk out, what would an experience look like that is targeted at Internet Citizens?
Head on over and chime in on the conversation.
