Drop

Justin Girdler put together this video collage to roll before a really heavy morning at Gateway Church. The clip really takes people to the edge and probably opened up some wounds…which can be really good for healing. The chat on the internet campus and the prayer teams at all the campuses were really busy helping people heal, I think we really struck a nerve and moved a lot of people in a good direction.

Location Based App Ethics

I have become a fan of the location based app trend that is just beginning to gain some traction and is well on its way from being in the early adopter stage to mainstream. Go see Brent for a breakdown of a few.

Since there is some sort of competitive element that goes with them and more and more businesses that are rewarding users, I think it’s time we started a discussion about ethics.

Here are my proposals:

Don’t check in where you live
It never occurred to me to check in at home, but then I saw some people doing it. I don’t have a particular reason why you shouldn’t, other than the fact it’s dumb.

Don’t check in where you work
As businesses begin to offer rewards to the ‘leading’ users, it only makes sense. How can a restaurant offer a discount or special offer when the leading user on a given app is a waiter at the restaurant?

Connect with people in real life
Connect with the people who frequent the same spots as you, that’s the point of the whole thing isn’t it?

What other points need to be considered?

Center for Church Communication | Regional Network Coordinators

The Center for Church Communication is doing some cool things to help the ‘C’hurch in America communicate the most important story…Jesus:

“Churches have the greatest story ever told, but they don’t know how to tell it. We think there’s a communication problem. That remarkable story is lost thanks in part to poor research, little or no planning, bad clip art, cheesy photos and ignorable ads”

You may not have heard of the Center for Church Communication, but chances are you have visited their Church Marketing Sucks blog.

This last fall the CFCC appointed a board of directors and also appointed Cynthia Ware as their executive director. One strategy that is being initiated is to build a network of leaders around the country who dwell in church communication space and they asked me to represent the Austin, TX area, which is an honor I excitedly have excepted.

The Task:

  • Grow our network of church comm professionals
  • Promote the good, the true & the beautiful in church communication
  • Support church comm professionals with resources, mentorship, training, etc.

The Team (so far):

Basically this team is here to be the eyes and ears for the CFCC throughout the country and to help network more people who are passionate and gifted in communicating the most important story.

If you’re involved in communications at your church, connect with the closest person to you on that list and watch for more to come.

Gateway Church Internet Campus Launch

The first phase in our internet campus family of sites launches this Sunday January 17th!

We will be live streaming the Sunday morning services from the Gateway Church McNeil campus starting at 9:30 AM (CST).

I can’t say enough how excited I am about it.

Here’s how you can help:

Late night entitlement

Conan is the now. Leno is the old. Fallon is the future.

They’re all really good at what they do.

Conan is approaching the time in his life where he will have peak impact.

Leno is on the other side of that curve.

Fallon is just starting his journey.

Who would you invest in?

I see churches with leaders who are in it way past their prime and sitting right there in the wings is a leader who is blossoming.

but there’s this thing….ENTITLEMENT.

I hope I’m willing to step aside when my time comes_

Educated, rich white people and God

Over at The Mystery is the Truth is a quick look at some demographic studies that starts with listing US States by what percent of people believe in god. The post then goes on to connect the dots of how white and how rich the states are and I concluded that Educated, rich white people are less likely to believe in god.

What thoughts do you have when you first soak in that statement?

Why has the church been so poor at reaching educated white people?

Is it the Sunday school answers and feel good country club vibe that a lot of churches have modeled?

Some questions you should ask yourself:

Can I allow people room and time to process through truths about God without forcing the issue?

Can I articulate truths about God without referencing the Bible?

Can I put my socio-political stigmas aside and join the conversation objectively?
