It’s better to have social media and not need it then to need social media and not have it

I know some people looking for jobs. Jobs that value people with good public communication skills and people with solid networks. I saw a married couple post on their Facebook status that they were starting the process of adopting a foreign child and were looking to raise money.

The people in both of these situations need a strong social media network to better accomplish their goals.

None of them have such a network.

I’ll add that I hate when people just game social media for personal gain, but this is not some fad, you need to get in the game.

Worry about ‘getting it’ later.

It's awkward to see my grandparents have a higher degree of integration with social media than some of my co-workers.

If you want to know a culture you must attend to their tools of communication.

I'm struggling to decide what I think about this concept. I think we lose a large degree of our ability to interact on a personal "in person" level with people when we rely so heavily on social media. That said, the instantaneous nature does aid in spreading needed word about events or circumstances that require lots of attention.

to paint the context better, I'm speaking to people who now or in the future wish to communicate to a lot of people
