Base

My kids are full of life and dwell in a reality of possibility that I have to work so much harder at just to keep up. They can manage to have a good time doing almost anything. Which we can all learn from.

A lot of times a simple walk through a store turns into a game of tag. One will quickly tag the other and yell; “YOU’RE IT!” Then sprint in the opposite direction.

As the one who is now ‘IT’ draws near, the runner will cling to the nearest appropriate object and yell; “BASE!”

A shopping cart.

A pillar.

A clothing rack.

Mom.

Anything will do. When the pressure is on even the most insignificant object can be a refuge of peace.

Eventually the game becomes pointless and boring as almost everything has been declared base and there is almost no more running.

Just a reach from one base to the next.

The excitement is gone. The kids move on to the next thing.

Life isn’t supposed to be a constant seeking of refuge. A desire to stay safe and close to base.

Sure there are times when you need to take a break from it all, but the point is to get out there and play.

Music Monday | Decide what to be and go be it

This line from the song ‘Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise’ by the Avett Brothers and it has been stuck in my head since I first heard. The song speaks to me in so many ways. Today I’m flying around on Airplanes on my way to be with God in the mountains and to break bread with three of the most important men in my life.

Do yourself a favor and listen to this a few times:

Three dead people I want to chat with

*Every day this week I’ll be blogging about people I would love to have a chance to sit and talk with.

I guess I could have put it a nicer way but I wanted a short title.

Lao Tzu | taoist philosopher
Most known for writing the Tao te Ching which is the literary centerpiece for Taoism written around 600 BC. Lao Tzu’s handle on the simple truths of life is so profound and is in line with Biblical principles in a captivating way. I would really love to hear why he wrote it and where he learned these truths.

CS Lewis | author
Of course. Who wouldn’t? Clive wrote a few of my favorite books and based on what I know of his personality he was probably a cool dude to hang out with. I’d love to buy him a pint of ale and hear talking point on politics, love and God.

Peter | apostle
Peter was a ‘ready – fire – aim’ type of guy…which is how I run. I love his passion for life and for the people closest to him. I’m willing to bet he was a fun guy to hang around.

Cornhole; it’s a southern thing

We dropped in on Crosspoint Church in Nashville while on the Intersection road trip a few weeks ago and the staff showed us a little game called corn hole.

Video from an interview with Pete Wilson is being cut right now. We’ll get that out just as soon as it’s ready.

Three personalities that I want to chat with

*Every day this week I’ll be blogging about people I would love to have a chance to sit and talk with.

This list is of people that are known for one reason or another.

Christian Hasoi | pro skater
Like most skater kids in the 80′s I was a huge fan of Christian Hasoi. The dude has a captivating personality and it shows every time he puts his feet on the maple. It was his personality and his eccentricities that led to his downfall and a 10 year jail sentence for possession of drugs. Christian has been out for a few years now and has turned his life around.

I would love to hear his story first hand…and of course have a skate session.

Russel | survivor
I have a love hate relationship with survivor. Up until Russel was on survivor last year I mostly hated it. I didn’t like it because most of the players of the game had trouble buying into the fact that it is a game. So they spend most of their time in a personal ethical battle on how to play and still ‘be the person they are when they’re not playing‘. I liked Russel because he took it for what it’s really worth and played the game how it should be….with no regrets.

I want to talk with Russel about the real Russel…who seems like a really cool guy to me.

Diane Rehm | radio host
Do you have a grandmother who when she speaks in that certain voice you listen close because true wisdom is being delivered? I don’t either. But Diane Rehm has filled that roll in my life. She always has the right questions to ask and can make the mot mundane topic seem ripe with truth and weight.

Diane needs to come over to our house for Thanksgiving to share stories of the people she has met and the places she has been.

This is a great performance of Blue Ridge Mountains by the Fleet Foxes. You’ll have to sit through a long intro before it gets to the main performance.

Three musicians I want to chat with

*Every day this week I’ll be blogging about people I would love to have a chance to sit and talk with.

Since Monday is for music, here’s three musicians I would love to have a cup of coffee with:

David Gilmour | guitar/singer – pink floyd
This probably goes without saying….since Pink Floyd is my favorite band; and yes I realize that every time I write that I alienate a lot of readers who only knew Pink Floyd from reading it on the t-shirts of various tweakers around campus in high school. Ask me about the Gospel According to Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ some time.

Sir David Gilmour has a great perspective on society and philosophy that I would love to dig into and learn from.

Greg Graffin | lead singer – bad religion
I’m a cog when it comes to my spirituality. My spirituality is built up as I ask the tough questions. The music of Bad Religion and the lyrics of Greg Graffin have actually been an important part of my spiritual journey. Greg is a staunch atheist…it’s one of the issues he writes about most. I appreciate the questions he asks and I have spent a lot of time trying to understand how to come to the answers to those questions.

So, Greg, let’s get together and talk about punk rock, politics, science, sociology and God.

John McCrea | singer – cake
Cake was the biggest band on the local scene where I grew up.  It was this scene that taught me that the best music is rarely on the radio. If you are a casual listener of Cake than you might think them to be a goofy band with nothing to say. If you really give Cake a listen, through the goofiness you will here some deep thoughts and questions.

John and I could talk about growing up in Sacramento and how much that city has changed in the last 20 years.

What musician would you love a chance to sit an chat with?

tomorrow: actors
