Asking an important question about internet church
Head on over the ChurchCrunch to see the latest post in the ‘confessions of an internet pastor’ series.
Today’s question is:
What if we had no ingrained concept of what a church service is, go to a building – hear some songs – listen to a talking head – walk out, what would an experience look like that is targeted at Internet Citizens?
Head on over and chime in on the conversation.

Planting a church on the internet | step 1 – show up
If you are going to plant a church anywhere, the first step you take is to go there. Simple.
When you get there, you find as many ways as you can to connect with people.
You find needs to meet.
You celebrate life with the community.
You walk right along side the community.
This has to happen first. before one note is played in a worship gathering. Before one word is said from a pulpit.
The same goes for planting a church on the internet.
How do we meet needs and celebrate life on the internet?

Look out Austin, here we come
That’s right!
Back in January we announced that we were taking steps toward planting a church this year and little did I know back then that this vision would take a turn in the direction that it has.
We will be planting a church in the biggest community in the world…the internet.
I have taken on the role of ‘Internet Campus Pastor‘ at Gateway Church in Austin Texas. Details aside we will be on site in Austin some time in June.
Thank you mentors, friends, family and Impact Church for praying with and for us as we took these steps. I can’t wait to see what God will do through Gateway Church on the web and in Austin.
To stay up on all the latest, you can .

Why plant a church #1
I have been in the trenches of church planting for the last 5 years and I love it.
I worked at Burger King for like 3 months when I was a junior in High School and my experience there has made it hard for me to step into a Burger King. I have seen churches and church plants do the same thing to people, they spend a few years behind the scenes doing a church plant and then they swear it off for the rest of their lives.
I think my feeling is that I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have a hard time envisioning myself at an established church with all of the potential that lies waiting for church plants, not because I don’t like the established church, it’s just so hard to ignore what needs to be done in church planting.

The Church Lawn
I’m sure there are different schools of thought on lawn care, I haven’t delved deep into the inner workings of the lawn care philosophy community, but I have my own ideas on how to produce lush grass. I would qualify that by saying that my current lawn is my first attempt at such an endeavor and it is only 200 square feet, so controlling the variables is probably easier for me than some dude with half an acre.
My lawn looks killer after a few weeks.
So here’s my secret:
Start from scratch
The beauty is in the fact that there isn’t any grass there that is stuck in its ways. There hasn’t been time for weeds to settle their roots. I could pick the type of grass that likes to live in the local climate. I was able to rip open the ground before planting so I could put up to date irrigation in that would meet the needs of my lawn. Now all of the grass that is sprouting up is new and I bet if I could talk to it, it would be pretty darn excited about what’s going on.
Starting from scratch has its advantages for a church too, which is one of the reasons I have been involved in church planting for the last 5 and a half years.
I mention this as a primer for info that I will be delivering very soon. Exciting news.
