Book Swap

In an effort to keep clutter out of my life I give my books away after I read them. The thing is I don’t have enough people near me doing the same thing so I thought I would hit up the bloggers out there to see who wants to swap.

Here’s what I’m unloading right now:

Jesus Wants to Save Christians | Rob Bell
Pretty solid book on empires and how the Church is effected by them through history and currently.

The Ransomed Heart | John Eldridge
I’m not sure where I got this or what it’s about…I’m not much of a John Eldridge fan. I never understood the Wild at Heart situation.

A Million Miles in a Thousand Years | Donald Miller
Great read on story telling

Want to read on of these? Let me know what book you have to swap and we can mail them to each other.

Monday Pile

Taking a play from Justin Wise’s book I figured I’d see if the warms up my brain on Monday morning.

  • SXSW Interactive starts on Friday. If the web is the centerpiece of what you do…this is the most important gathering of the year for people in that space. If you’re in ministry and are in town for SXSWi, hit us up at the 8Bit MeetUp.
  • I’m not very excited about the tablet movement right now, but the iPad 2 looks pretty tasty. I’ll probably give it another year.
  • Started coaching my sons soccer team, this is my third season coaching kids younger than 6…it’s a blast.
  • Gateway Church Austin had an epic service yesterday complete with Portlandia, Ray LaMontagne and a great message by Ted Beasley.
  • The grass is starting to come back to life from a hard winter here in Austin. I got the mountain bike tuned up and ready to fly!
  • Seth Godin one liners can really mess you up…in a good way
  • I broke down and bought Florence and the Machine; Lungs. Yes it’s pop music, but I think it’s the kind of album that the typical pop stars think they are making when they crank out their garbage.
  • It’s bulk trash week in my neighborhood so everyone has pile of stuff on the street. It looks like Beirut or something.

OneFifty.me | a community of psalms

Sacred texts, even outside the bounds of having put faith in them, still have great virtue in one’s life. I regularly read the Tao Te Ching (yes, we own eightyone.me, stand by).

We’ve launched a project to crowd source people’s stories based on the Psalms.

I would love for you to contribute to the project, head on over to www.onefifty.me to share your story.

Impact & Longevity

Bones Brigade

The guys in this photo made an impact on my life long ago. They didn’t know it then. They might know now that they have shaped a lot of peoples lives. They don’t know me.

Name someone that doesn’t know you that made an impact on your life long ago and that impact is still part of who you are.

If we amplify everything, we hear nothing

True.

What are you saying? How are you saying? Are people getting it?

This is John Stewart’s closing remarks from last Saturday’s event. It can be summed up in a few words not the least of which are the title of this post. Here are some other great quotes.

“I can’t control what people think this was, I can only tell you my intentions.

“We hear EVERY DAMN DAY about how fragile our country is…on the brink of catastrophe. Torn by polarizing hate…and how it’s a shame that we can’t work together to get things done. But the truth is…we do… The only place we don’t is HERE [points to capital building] or on cable TV.”

There’s a lot to be learned about communication and messaging here.

Three dead people I want to chat with

*Every day this week I’ll be blogging about people I would love to have a chance to sit and talk with.

I guess I could have put it a nicer way but I wanted a short title.

Lao Tzu | taoist philosopher
Most known for writing the Tao te Ching which is the literary centerpiece for Taoism written around 600 BC. Lao Tzu’s handle on the simple truths of life is so profound and is in line with Biblical principles in a captivating way. I would really love to hear why he wrote it and where he learned these truths.

CS Lewis | author
Of course. Who wouldn’t? Clive wrote a few of my favorite books and based on what I know of his personality he was probably a cool dude to hang out with. I’d love to buy him a pint of ale and hear talking point on politics, love and God.

Peter | apostle
Peter was a ‘ready – fire – aim’ type of guy…which is how I run. I love his passion for life and for the people closest to him. I’m willing to bet he was a fun guy to hang around.

Video from an interview with Pete Wilson is being cut right now. We’ll get that out just as soon as it’s ready.
